QUEENS, NY — Interim manager Andy Green is still expected to return to the front office following the 2026 season, where he will resume his duties as senior vice president of player development, David Stearns confirmed on Monday.

“It’s my expectation that he returns to the front office,” Stearns said. “…I think Andy’s expectation is he’s going to rejoin the front office, and I have no reason to believe otherwise right now.”

Green has done an admirable job stabilizing the Mets after a disastrous first half led to the firing of Carlos Mendoza in late June. Prior to Monday night’s series opener against the San Diego Padres, the 49-year-old was 22-22 as the caretaker skipper, including a recent stretch of eight wins in their last 11 games.

“I think he’s done a great job here,” Stearns said. “It helps that he’s had that familiarity with some of those players who are coming through our system. They know him, he knows them. He also has some familiarity with our veteran players, and so that wasn’t completely new to anyone as well. Any time a manager steps into a new role, having those pre-existing relationships is definitely a benefit.”

This winter will be the first time Stearns leads a managerial search as Mets president of baseball operations. Former Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora leads the list of external candidates, while Carlos Beltran remains a possibility to reassume the perch he was forced to vacate six years ago after he was named in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

“When we get to that point, I’ll be able to talk more broadly and holistically about what we would be looking for in the next manager,” Stearns said. “I don’t think right now is the right time to have those conversations.”
