Carlos Mendoza is out as Mets manager after parts of three seasons with the organization, the team announced on Friday morning, following yet another dreadful stretch amid a nightmarish 2026 season. Senior vice president of player development Andy Green will take over as interim manager for the remainder of the campaign.

President of baseball operations David Stearns, who had a bevy of opportunities to make this move, finally made the call after the Mets were swept in a four-game series by the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field, including a miserable doubleheader on Wednesday in which they were outscored 20-8.

They now sit 13 games under .500 and a staggering 15 games out of the NL East lead.

“Carlos has led the organization with passion and grace and is beloved by everyone who works with him on a daily basis,” Stearns said. “Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. Unfortunately, we know we are falling short, and change is necessary to move forward.”

Mendoza is not blameless in the Mets’ failings this season. In fact, he only deserves a sliver of it. Stearns is responsible for building a shallow, ineffective roster that was too dependent on injury-prone players despite a $380 million payroll.

The Mets have been one of Major League Baseball’s worst teams for over a calendar year, now. After having the best record in the National League in early June last season, they collapsed over a three-and-a-half-month stretch to completely miss the postseason, then went on a 12-game losing streak earlier this season to dig an immediate hole.

The disastrous turn of events has been baseball’s most unexpected storyline. Mendoza led the Mets to an NLCS appearance in 2024, which was considered well ahead of schedule and just the start of a golden age for a team mired in mediocrity for most of its existence.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment,” owner Steve Cohen said. “He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best.

“Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”
