QUEENS, NY — The Mets will call up right-handed pitcher Christian Scott from Triple-A Syracuse to start Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, manager Carlos Mendoza revealed on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old, who lost all of last season due to Tommy John surgery, will take David Peterson’s spot in the rotation for at least one turn. The veteran southpaw was demoted to a piggyback role for Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Cubs, where he fired 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with one strikeout, after relieving Tobias Myers.

Peterson lost his spot after allowing 14 runs in his previous three starts. His role will be “fluid” in the bullpen during this turn through the Mets’ rotation, but initial expectations are that he will be used as a more traditional reliever.

The Mets will continue using a five-man rotation, with Freddy Peralta getting the ball on Friday, followed by Kodai Senga on Saturday.

Scott has been particularly good in his last two starts, which wiped away a dreadful 2026 debut in which he allowed six earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings on April 3. Since then, he has allowed just two runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts in his last 10.1 innings of work.

“The way he’s been throwing the ball the past couple of outings in the minor leagues, we knew it was just going to be a matter of time that he was going to be helping us here at the big league club, and here we are giving him that opportunity” Mendoza said. “He earned it. We’re excited about that.”

Scott made his MLB debut during the 2024 season with the Mets, posting a 4.56 ERA with 39 strikeouts and 12 walks across nine starts (47.1 innings) and two separate stints. He was placed on the injured list with a sprained UCL in late July of that season, with surgery already a very real possibility. They took a more conservative approach, and Scott’s velocity never returned during his rehab stint, leaving surgery in September as his only option.
