New York Jets cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers collapsed during Tuesday’s joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Florham Park, which was being held in noticeable heat.
He was quickly attended to by the Jets’ medical team, placed on a stretcher, and administered an IV. While practice was paused for about 10 minutes, he was sent to a local hospital by ambulance.
Head coach Aaron Glenn said following the practice that Stiggers was alert quickly after fainting.
“From what I know, he came to the sideline after a play, and he actually fell out,” Glenn said. “The good thing was that he was conscious. Our guys did a hell of a job, just like most medical staffs around this league do in situations like that, and they took the necessary steps to make sure we do everything we can to be on board in those situations. He was able to talk… For the most part, he was good.”
The 24-year-old Stiggers is entering his third season with the Jets, as he continues to carve his place in the NFL despite taking an unusual career path. The cornerback skipped college, went straight from high school to the Fan Controlled Football league, and then signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. He was named the CFL’s most outstanding rookie in 2023.
The Jets drafted him the following year, making him the first player since 1999 to be drafted by the NFL from the CFL. He has appeared in 29 of a possible 34 games over the last two seasons, making five starts and recording 35 total tackles with two fumble recoveries.
