Detectives are looking for a suspect who slashed a man playing chess in Union Square on Sunday morning.

According to police sources, the broad daylight attack occurred in Union Square Park at around 10:20 a.m. on June 21. Cops say a 62-year-old man playing the board game was sitting at the chess set when he was approached from behind and slashed with a sharp object across his back.

The victim, who suffered a laceration, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.

The suspect was last seen wearing a blue shirt and a baseball cap; he fled westbound on 14th Street on foot. It is unclear if the attack stemmed from a beef over the game.

Union Square is widely known for its chess tables, where players hang out and wait for challenges, often for a fee.

No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this slashing can call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS (for Spanish, dial 888-57-PISTA). You can also submit tips online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, or on X (formerly Twitter) @NYPDTips. All calls and messages are kept confidential.
