Red Bull New York is in pursuit of Mexican international attacking midfielder Brian Gutierrez, sources tell amNewYork on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Gutierrez, who plays his club soccer with Chivas de Guadalajara of Liga MX, is an Illinois native who represented the United States at the youth level but switched to join the Mexican national side at the senior level — a move he was able to make due to his heritage.

Considered one of the country’s rising stars, he moved from the Chicago Fire in MLS to Chivas in December of 2025, where he has two goals and an assist in 24 appearances across all competitions. He has appeared in all four of Chivas’ Liga MX matches this season, making three starts.

He got the call to represent Mexico at the 2026 World Cup, where he made four appearances (two starts) for El Tri, which advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to England in a frenzied match at the Azteca.

New York has had recent dealings with Chivas, purchasing American winger Cade Cowell in December. Red Bull also has another winger in Jorge Ruvalcaba, who made the jump from Pumas in Liga MX over the winter and was on Mexico’s preliminary World Cup roster, though he did not make the final cut.

Michael Bradley’s men are in need of an attacking boost, which at times this season has been overly reliant on the 18-year-old American star, Julian Hall. Red Bull’s 30 goals scored in 20 MLS matches this season are tied for ninth out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. Bringing in an up-and-comer like Gutierrez to provide more depth to what has been a dynamic attacking trio would go far in fixing that. There has been plenty left to be desired from a midfield mainly comprised of Swedish veteran and former RB Leipzig man Emil Forsberg, American youngster Adri Mehmeti, and Ronald Donkor.

Major League Soccer’s secondary transfer window runs through Sept. 2.
