Just one week after being demoted to Triple-A upon the completion of his rehab assignment from offseason shoulder surgery, Anthony Volpe is back with the New York Yankees after Jose Caballero was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right middle finger fracture.
Caballero suffered the injury during Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers when he dove back into first base. He was sent for an MRI on Monday to decipher the full extent of the injury.
It offers Volpe an opportunity to get back into the swing of life in the majors and perhaps regain the good graces of team management. Once projected as the franchise shortstop of the future, he owns a .662 OPS over his three years in the majors, and his defense regressed significantly last season to the tune of a league-leading 19 errors.
According to manager Aaron Boone, though, Volpe is simply keeping Caballero’s seat warm at shortstop.
“That would be my expectation,” the skipper said when asked if Caballero would re-assume starting shortstop duties upon his return.
There has still been no inkling about moving Volpe to a different position, as he was set up at shortstop during the last week with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. His arrival prompted the organization to play top prospect George Lombard Jr. at second and third base.
Caballero was batting .259 with a .720 OPS, four home runs, 13 RBI, and 13 steals this season. The Yankees started Max Schuemann at shortstop for Tuesday’s middle game against the Baltimore Orioles.
