The bare minimum for Mike Brown might just be winning the Eastern Conference title and getting the Knicks to their first NBA Finals appearance in 27 years, or else a pink slip could await.

Sam Amick of The Athletic reported on Monday that “the noise surrounding the Knicks’ Mike Brown won’t die down unless they reach the NBA Finals, and even that might not be good enough for the first-year New York coach to be safe.”

Expectations were already sky high this season after making their first Eastern Conference Final appearance since 2000 last year. Team president Leon Rose showed former head coach Tom Thibodeau the exit, attempted to create a deeper roster so the unchanged starting five doesn’t run out of gas late in the postseason, and brought in Brown to oversee a championship push.

But team owner James Dolan heaped even more pressure on Brown earlier this season when, in a radio interview, he said it was the NBA Finals or bust.

The worst-kept secret in sports is that wholesale changes await the Knicks if they do not fulfill those expectations. A significant member, or two, of the current core complementing Jalen Brunson will be shipped out, whether that be Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, or both. Whether that comes in a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo remains to be seen, but it is a potential dream scenario for many at Madison Square Garden.

As things stand, the Knicks don’t look like legitimate championship contenders despite winning the NBA Cup back in December. They have their hands full with the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of their playoff series, though an emphatic Game 4 win down in Georgia at least eased some anxieties after falling behind 2-1. But for all the credit Brown deserves for making some adjustments, the Hawks’ worst showing of this series provides rosier optics.

They do have the good fortune of competing in an Eastern Conference without a runaway juggernaut. The Detroit Pistons look beatable, and the Knicks provide a solid matchup for the Boston Celtics even with Jayson Tatum back in the fold.

None of that matters, though. Dolan wants results, regardless of how they come about. It’s a rigid mandate, but a championship window like this doesn’t stay open for this franchise often. Especially considering it has been 53 years since the last time they won it all.
