The New York City Marathon is celebrating 50 years, marking a major historical feat for one of the city’s major running events. The 26.2-mile run has evolved over the years, and each borough has played a part in making the race what it is today.

Manhattan has always been a staple for the iconic event, and Central Park is one of its most significant landmarks. The first annual marathon was held entirely in the world-famous park with a budget of only $1,000. On Sept. 13, 1970, the entry fee was only $1, and there were only 127 registered runners, 55 of whom finished the race.

The original course involved multiple loops of Central Park and was considered to be a relatively small, local road race. The evolution has spanned all 50 years as the marathon continues to grow. As the event began to gain traction, the size of Central Park became too confined, and therefore, expanded throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

To celebrate the city’s bicentennial, the 200th anniversary, the organizers expanded the course to accommodate the rising numbers of participants. The first marathon spanning all five boroughs had 2,090 entrants and 1,549 finishers. This is where the race transformed from a local park-based competition to a race that incorporated and showcased New York’s neighborhoods, bridges and communities.

Manhattan marks the home stretch for these dedicated participants who have spent months, even years, training for their attempt to finish the marathon, and the scenery here is something incomparable. The powerful contrast of skyscrapers, major avenues, and dense crowds accompanies the racers to their final destination, Central Park. A full-circle moment for the 50 years of tradition.

Even though the race might have outgrown its original home, it symbolically makes its way back to where its roots became so strong. In Central Park, history repeats itself as runners make their way across the finish line, becoming part of the ever-evolving New York City Marathon. Spectators from all around the world cheer on runners from all different walks of life.
