Emil Forsberg has signed a deal to remain with Red Bull New York through the 2027 MLS sprint season, but is expected to depart the club for his native Sweden, as first reported by Daniel Kristoffersson of Swedish outlet Sportbladet on Wednesday.
Red Bull New York declined to comment upon inquiry from amNewYork.
The 35-year-old Forsberg’s three-year contract was set to expire at the end of the 2026 season. The veteran midfielder made the jump to North America after a storied and decorated career with Red Bull Leipzig of the German Bundesliga and the Swedish national team.
He has worn the captain’s armband since his arrival, recording 27 goals with 18 assists across all competitions. In his first season with the club, he anchored New York to its second-ever MLS Cup Final appearance, falling to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Extending Forsberg through the sprint season would allow him to sign with a team in Sweden’s top flight, the Allsvenskan, before the start of the 2027-28 season. MLS is using the sprint season, which will run from February to April, to transition to a new calendar. This is the final year that America’s top flight will run from February through December. It will now follow the more traditional August through May slate used in most major leagues around the world.
