Former Hialeah Council President Jesus Tundidor just became the first person to announce his candidacy for a to-be-called Special Election for House District 112, and future Speaker Mike Redondo is already backing his campaign.
Tundidor, a healthcare executive who served on the City Council from 2019 to January 2026, announced his candidacy Friday.
He hopes to succeed outgoing Hialeah Rep. Alex Rizo, a fellow Republican who won re-election in June, but is forgoing two more years in the HD 112 seat to seek a spot in the Senate instead.
“For six years, I’ve fought for lower taxes, safer streets, protecting our seniors, and a government that respects the people who pay for it,” Tundidor said in a statement.
“That’s the fight I’m bringing to Tallahassee for District 112.”
Tundidor’s announcement also included an endorsement from Redondo, a freshman Representative who last year won a race to be House Speaker after the 2030 elections.
Redondo called him “the best candidate to represent District 112 in Tallahassee.”
“Jesus Tundidor has spent his career proving he knows how to get things done for Hialeah families, cutting taxes, cutting red tape, and protecting our seniors and families,” Redondo said. “He will be essential to keeping a strong Republican majority in the Florida House. I’m proud to give Jesus my full support, and I’ll be with him every step of the way.”
A lifelong Hialeah resident, Tundidor’s tenure at City Hall was marked by opposition to tax increases, a push to repeal the city’s water and sewer franchise fee to lower residents’ utility bills and sponsorship of ordinances that his campaign said generated millions of dollars for the city through development-linked fees rather than higher property taxes.
“He also sponsored measures to incentivize affordable housing, backed the addition of 100 police officers over four years, and provided direct constituent services to more than 3,500 residents and small businesses,” a campaign press note said.
If elected, Tundidor vows to back efforts that lower taxes, boost affordable housing and reduce the cost of living for Floridians, including lowering property insurance costs. Other priorities include supporting seniors and strengthening neighborhood safety.
His community involvements include service as Vice Chair of the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora and work with the Special Olympics and local hospital Boards.
In November, he placed second in a four-way contest for Hialeah Mayor.
Before winning a local office, he worked as an aide to former state Senator and current Miami-Dade Commissioner René García.
HD 112 covers the northwestern portion of Miami-Dade, including most of Hialeah, Miami Springs, Virginia Gardens, and part of Miami. The District also contains Miami International Airport, one of the county’s two main economic engines alongside PortMiami.
The date for the HD 112 Special Election hasn’t been set yet.
