After their journey to the “Showcase of the Immortals” began at the Royal Rumble, Roman Reigns and Liv Morgan are back at the top of professional wrestling, with both superstars winning championship titles at “Wrestlemania 42” in Las Vegas.
Morgan kicked it off by pinning Stephanie Vaquer during Saturday night’s first night of the WWE Premium Live Event (PLE) to reclaim the Women’s World Championship. One day later, Reigns took down fan favorite CM Punk to capture the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Sunday night’s second night.
Cody Rhodes retained his Undisputed Championship in a singles match against friend turned bitter rival Randy Orton, while Oba Femi upset Brock Lesnar in Lesnar’s final match. And with that, here are four takeaways from WWE’s “Wrestlemania 42.”
Reigns is back at the top
Last year, Reigns left the main event of “Wrestlemania 41” in the losing column. His status as the promotion’s top superstar was in doubt, as Punk once again rose to fame. But “The Original Tribal Chief” refused to back down in the face of adversity in their second meeting at the “Showcase of the Immortals.”
Reigns did everything in his power to beat down his opponent, using every move in his arsenal to his advantage. A power bomb through the announcer’s table and back-to-back spears kept Punk down and out for the count in a pinfall victory for Reigns, who added another championship to his Hall of Fame-worthy resume.
Morgan wins a third world championship
Morgan had already established herself as one of the top superstars in the women’s division, considering she has already won two world championships thus far. But a third title win is what further separated her from the rest.
Against Vaquer, Morgan hit her opponent with two of her finishing moves, known as the “oblivion.” Seconds later, she was crowned the new WWE Women’s World heavyweight champion by defeating her bitter rival via pinfall.
Rhodes overcame his former friend
Rhodes and Orton once had one of the strongest friendships in professional wrestling. But at “The Showcase of the Immortals,” they were pitted against each other in a main event match for the Rhodes Undisputed Championship.
Fists flew, and blood was drawn, as both superstars inflicted a heavy amount of pain on each other. Interference by former NFL punter turned WWE commentator Pat McAfee took the match to another level, with Rhodes on the receiving end of most of it.
But the “American Nightmare” would get the upper hand by catching Orton with a Cross Rhodes to defeat his former ally. Yet, Rhodes’ night didn’t end there. After the match, Orton unleashed a vicious assault on his opponent, resulting in Rhodes being rushed out of the arena by medical personnel.
Lesnar hangs it up
Lesnar has one of the most storied and impressive careers in all of professional wrestling. He’s a first ballot Hall of Famer with the amount of championships he’s won and the raw talent he brings into the squared circle. But his career came to a presumable end against Femi, who has quickly become the company’s next powerhouse.
In a symbolic passing of the torch, Femi defeated Lesnar by pinfall in a bout that lasted all of five minutes. In the end, Femi was victorious, while Lesnar left his gloves and boots in the center of the ring before hugging longtime manager Paul Heyman to close out an all-time great career.
