The Yankees snagged one more bat before the trade deadline on Monday evening, acquiring outfielder Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants for No. 5 prospect, left-hander Henry Lalane, and No. 13 prospect, shortstop Kaeden Kent.
Kent is the son of recently-inducted Hall of Famer Jeff Kent.
Ramos, a 26-year-old left-fielder, has been limited to 74 games this season because of a right quad strain, and has struggled to find much consistency on a bad Giants team, slashing .264/.304/.424 (.728 OPS) with nine home runs and 34 RBI. It is close to his past production, which saw him hit 22 and 21 home runs over the previous two seasons.
Still, there is the potential of Ramos developing into something of a wild card for these Yankees. His analytics suggest that he should be able to do well in the hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium. A 13.7% barrel rate this season ranks within MLB’s 88th percentile. His 91.9 mph average exit velocity is in the 87th percentile, and his 48.3% hard-hit rate is in the 85th.
A right-handed bat had been a priority of the Yankees throughout this summer, with its offense sapped of its big boppers. Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton are on the injured list, prompting general manager Brian Cashman to strike a deal with the Washington Nationals for slugger Luis Garcia Jr. on Sunday.
Garcia, though, is left-handed. As is the team’s most important healthy bat, Ben Rice. Ramos should at least cushion the blow while Judge and Stanton finish their respective recoveries.
