A large tree appeared to split and fall on a Gramercy roadway Monday morning, blocking the roadway as rain pounded the city.
According to FDNY sources, the tree collapsed just before 10 a.m. on East 18th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. While no injuries were reported, the large tree blocked the roadway and left branches scattered over nearby parked cars.
Firefighters responded and used cutting tools to attempt to slice through the large trunk and branches. After about an hour, firefighters taped off the scene, and traffic was still blocked as of Monday afternoon.
FDNY said that the Parks Department has been notified.
This comes as rain is expected to batter the five boroughs on Aug. 3, with flood warnings in effect well into the evening, and thunderstorms also expected.
“Flooding can happen quickly, and people living in basement apartments are at the greatest risk,” NYC emergency management said in a social media post Monday. Just a few inches of floodwater can be deadly. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
Two to three inches of rain are expected.
