Authorities say they are still investigating after two people were struck and killed by a train at Manhattan’s Spring Street station early Sunday morning.
According to police sources, a man and woman were spotted sitting on the roadbed at around 3:14 a.m. as a southbound 4 train pulled into the station. The motorman attempted to apply the emergency brakes; however, it was too late, and the train struck both individuals.
When emergency services arrived, they discovered a 24-year-old woman and an unidentified man in his 20s under the train. EMS pronounced them both dead at the scene. The identity of the female is being withheld pending proper family notification.
Police sources say it is currently unclear why the pair were sitting on the tracks.
amNewYork reached out to the MTA for comment. The agency confirmed that the deaths took place but did not provide a statement.
The investigation remains ongoing.
