Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is expected to take the managerial job for the German national team, according to multiple reports on Sunday.

The 59-year-old, who led Liverpool to a Champions League title and a Premier League crown during his nine seasons in charge, joined Red Bull as its head of global sport in October 2024. In that role, he worked extensively with Red Bull New York, even acting as an advisor while its new state-of-the-art training center in Morris Township, NJ, was being built.

Klopp was at Sports Illustrated Stadium as recently as last week to outline the club’s future from grassroots to the first team.

But coaching rumors have never been far from the legendary German gaffer. When his time at Liverpool ended, he was immediately linked to the vacant United States men’s national team vacancy, which he declined. The job ultimately went to Mauricio Pochettino, who has guided the squad to the Round of 16 at this summer’s World Cup on home soil.

Recent speculation also had him going to Real Madrid, which he described as “nonsense.”

The German job, however, appears to be the lone exception to coax Klopp back to the dugout. The three-time World Cup winners crashed out of this year’s tournament on Monday in a shock upset to Paraguay in penalties.

In the immediate aftermath of the loss, Klopp said that he hadn’t thought about taking over for ex-manager Julian Nagelsmann. When Nagelsmann resigned on Friday, Klopp confirmed on German broadcaster Magenta TV that the national team had approached him.

Before his storied run at Liverpool, Klopp gained international acclaim for his work leading Borussia Dortmund, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles and reaching the 2013 Champions League Final.
