The NBA world is still waiting on LeBron James’ free-agency decision after alerting the Lakers that he would be coming back for a 24th season, but just not with them.
As it stands, a third stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers, a second with the Miami Heat, or a move to either the Philadelphia 76ers or Golden State Warriors remain the most likely scenarios for the 41-year-old future Hall-of-Famer.
James will be at the Javits Center in New York for Fanatics Fest 2026 this week, which provides a large, controlled stage to potentially announce his next destination — and possibly his last in the NBA. On Thursday, he will partake in a live recording of his “Mind the Game” podcast at 1:15 p.m. ET, where he will be joined by special co-host and Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton.
A day later, he will appear for a live recording of “The Shop.”
There is a chance that James’ next home will be announced before Fanatics Fest kicks off on Thursday, and that he will use his appearances to discuss his future. Ever the showman, he could also use the stage as an opportunity to build more suspense about his decision.
The Warriors and 76ers have been two of the more well-known suitors for James for some time. In Golden State, James could pair with Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler for one last veteran-laden run. In Philadelphia, the recent acquisition of Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics should reignite contending hopes for a franchise that has fell well short during the Joel Embiid era.
But the Heat are an intriguing landing spot after pulling off a blockbuster for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Then, on Sunday, Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson appeared on Sirius XM radio and revealed that his team is “in the mix for the greatest player of all-time.”
“It’s exciting. I think you’re nervous, but we understand how it is,” he continued. “Obviously, he’s earned that right to take his time. Obviously, family plays a big part in it. But I know the state of Ohio, man. There’s something special there.”
