Sacramento is one of the fastest-growing regions in California. It is attracting talent, welcoming new industries, and earning national attention. And now, a broad coalition of the city’s civic and business community is stepping forward to ensure that momentum.
Today, the Alliance for a Better Sacramento (Alliance) announced its formation and the release of a comprehensive policy roadmap — a call to action for City leaders, business owners, and community members who believe Sacramento’s best days are ahead and want a plan to get there.
“Sacramento has tremendous opportunity ahead, but opportunity alone is not enough. It requires leadership, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the fundamentals that allow communities to thrive,” said Robert Heidt, President & CEO of the Sacramento Metro Chamber. “The Alliance for a Better Sacramento brings together organizations that may represent different industries but share a common belief: a stronger city benefits every resident, business, and neighborhood.”
The roadmap, developed in response to Sacramento’s ongoing structural deficit, centers on three interconnected priorities that its members believe are essential to a thriving Sacramento:
- ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Sacramento has the location, the talent pipeline, and the infrastructure to compete with any city in the state. The roadmap proposes a STEEM framework — Spark, Transform, Expand, Enhance, Multiply — to fast-track catalytic Major Projects that create jobs, expand the tax base, and generate the resources needed to invest in every neighborhood.
- PUBLIC SAFETY: Safe streets and welcoming public spaces are not a luxury — they are the foundation on which everything else is built. The Alliance calls for clear, consistent enforcement of existing codes, a culture shift at City Hall that prioritizes public safety, and smart investments in technology that enable Sacramento’s dedicated officers to do more with the resources they have.
- EFFICIENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY: A city that earns the public trust spends wisely and delivers results. The Alliance calls for a Fiscal Efficiency Committee — including voices from the business and community sectors — to help Sacramento return to its core Charter services, evaluate past commitments, and modernize operations to ensure long-term sustainability.
“This is a practical roadmap for a stronger Sacramento. It does not ask the city to be everything to everyone,” said Tim Murphy, President and CEO of the North State Building Industry Association. “The Alliance urges the city to focus on the essentials: public safety, economic vitality, clean and safe neighborhoods, and a disciplined approach to spending taxpayer dollars. Doing so is the first step toward reestablishing Sacramento as a city that works for us all.”
