Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his right knee, the team announced on Wednesday.
He will undergo surgery, and the hope is that he will miss between six and eight weeks.
“We’re trying to schedule that as soon as possible,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “Once they go in there, we’ll have a better understanding of what we’re dealing with. Hopefully, it’s six to eight weeks… given the position that he plays… I don’t want to sit here and speculate. All we know is that we have to wait until they go in there.”
Alvarez suffered the injury during the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s victory against the Detroit Tigers, leaving the game mid-at-bat after fouling a ball back. Backup catcher Luis Torrens was forced to enter the game in a 2-2 count, where he drew a walk.
Hayden Senger was called up from Triple-A Syracuse and will serve as Torrens’ backup moving forward.
There was a moment of pause in the second inning when Alvarez momentarily looked down at his right knee after beating out what would have been an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. Instead, it scored the Mets’ first run of the night, sparking what developed into a 10-run unanswered stretch. Mendoza said there was no issue reported during that play.
The 24-year-old backstop was slashing .241/.317/.393 (.710 OPS) with four home runs in 37 games. Injury problems continue to plague him, as he was limited to just 76 games because of hand and back issues, along with a minor-league demotion.
He is the fourth regular member of the Mets’ lineup to hit the injured list, joining Francisco Lindor (calf), Jorge Polanco (ankle, wrist), and Luis Robert Jr. (back).
