The Mets are down each of their top two shortstops, as Ronny Mauricio is hitting the injured list after fracturing his left thumb during Saturday night’s loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury diving head-first into first base to beat out Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel during the seventh inning — a play in which he was initially called out, but deemed safe after review. He left the game after the half inning.

Mauricio was recalled from Triple-A last week and named the starting shortstop after Francisco Lindor landed on the IL with a strained calf that is expected to keep him out for months. He went 6-for-28 over that eight-game reign with one home run.

Bo Bichette slid over from third base to shortstop after Mauricio’s injury, and is the primary candidate to take over at the position moving forward. The former Blue Jay was a natural shortstop who spent his first seven years in the majors at that position before moving to the hot corner upon signing a three-year, $126 million deal to join the Mets this winter.

The Mets signed Andy Ibanez over the weekend to provide more infield depth, but the veteran only has six career MLB games at shortstop. Vidal Brujan, who was purchased from the Minnesota Twins back in January and was called up from Triple-A on Sunday, provides more experience at the position.
