‘A True American Hero’: Borough President Vito Fossella Helps Effort To Award Workers Sgt. Michael J. Ollis With Medal Of Honor

Borough President Vito Fossella penned a letter to President Donald Trump in assist of efforts to posthumously honor Workers Sergeant Michael J. Ollis with the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest army ornament.

He wrote the letter after Secretary of Warfare Pete Hegseth really helpful Workers Sergeant Ollis for the consideration.



“Workers Sergeant Ollis is the very instance of the American spirit — tenacity, patriotism, braveness, and repair to your fellow man,” mentioned Borough President Fossella. “His final sacrifice in protection of our nation, saving the lifetime of any person else, is an extremely heroic motion that resonates in our hearts to this very day. We hope Workers Sergeant Ollis might be bestowed the Medal of Honor, a medal he’s so deeply deserving of, in order that the generations to come back can look to him and study from his profound instance.”


A graduate of the Petrides Faculty, Workers Sergeant Ollis sacrificed his life whereas defending a Polish soldier from a suicide bomber at their base in Afghanistan throughout Operation Enduring Freedom on Aug. 28, 2013. He was solely 24.

Within the years since, Staten Islanders, together with his mother and father, Robert and Linda Ollis, have advocated for his sacrifice to be formally acknowledged and honored on the nationwide stage. 


Workers Sergeant Ollis was posthumously awarded the Purple Coronary heart, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star, in addition to the Polish authorities’s highest army award, the Polish Medal of Honor.
