Nolan McLean is a long shot to win National League Rookie of the Year, but the New York Mets’ ace still secured some hardware following his first full season in the bigs.
The 24-year-old right-hander took home the NL Gold Glove Award at pitcher, making some history and ending a drought in the process.
McLean is the first rookie pitcher to ever win a Gold Glove, providing steady play from a position that has historically been so inconsistent. Only three pitchers across Major League Baseball had more Defensive Runs Saved than McLean’s 4: Michael McGreevy, Tanner Bibee, and Shota Imanaga.
In 31 starts (179.2 innings), McLean only allowed six stolen bases and picked off three runners. Much of that has to do with a quick delivery from the stretch that is nearly impossible for opposing baserunners to read. There were only eight stolen-base attempts on him all season.
This is the first Gold Glove won by any Met since center fielder Juan Lagares in 2014. It was the second-longest drought in the majors behind the Washington Nationals, who have not had a Gold Glove winner since 2012. He is the second Mets pitcher to win the award, joining Ron Darling in 1989.
McLean’s all-around play has him firmly in the conversation for NL Rookie of the Year, though his teammate, Mets outfielder Carson Benge, is believed to hae better odds behind Cincinnati Reds designated hitter Sal Stewart and St. Louis Cardinals infielder JJ Wetherholt.
McLean went 12-10 with a 3.16 ERA, which ranked No. 1 among National League rookie pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched. His 194 strikeouts led all MLB rookies.
