A man in Ohio has admitted to beating his mother-in-law to death in the midst of divorce and child custody proceedings with her daughter.
Jonathan Schmidt, 35, was charged with aggravated murder in the death of 68-year-old Marcia Van Druten, as Law&Crime previously reported.
On Wednesday, Schmidt pleaded guilty to that charge and aggravated burglary, local CBS affiliate WTOL reported. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said they will ask the Lucas County court to dismiss five additional charges, including another count of aggravated murder.

On April 15 at about 9 p.m., Van Druten and her husband were at their home on Fox Hollow Court in Sylvania, Ohio, a city with a population of around 20,000 in the Toledo metropolitan area. Prosecutors detailed how Schmidt was on his way to the Van Drutens’ home when he made a stop at a Lowe’s store to buy a hammer and two crowbars.
The defendant was reportedly embroiled in a contentious divorce with his wife. According to authorities, he had threatened his mother-in-law before the night he killed her, with a witness reporting in December 2025 that Schmidt had said he could not promise that he would not hurt his wife or her mother.
Schmidt was apparently the one who filed for divorce, doing so after the couple’s 15-month-old son was born prematurely while they were honeymooning in Hawaii.
“One of Jon’s friends reached out to [the wife] saying they had received a message from Jon saying he was going to hurt her mom,” Emily Hayman, a friend of the daughter, told Toledo ABC affiliate WTVG in April. “And that terrified [the wife], so [she] tried calling her mom multiple times, and when her mom didn’t answer, she got scared and called her dad, and the phone was next to him so he heard the phone. He went downstairs and found her.”
Authorities said Schmidt had broken into Van Druten’s home by shattering sliding glass doors with a crowbar. While Van Druten’s husband slept upstairs and she sat in a chair downstairs, Schmidt approached, authorities said.
A camera behind the house captured the sound of breaking glass and Van Druten screaming Schmidt’s name, WTOL reported, citing prosecutors. The screaming then stopped — before the victim’s husband found her dead with a crowbar on top of her body.
Authorities said there was blood spatter throughout the room, and Van Druten was pronounced dead due to multiple blunt-force injuries.
Schmidt had fled, but he was arrested the next morning in La Salle, Michigan, about 25 miles northeast of the crime scene. He reportedly confessed to multiple people that he killed the victim, and he had shards of glass in his hood and pockets.
The defendant faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. He is due to be sentenced on Nov. 23.
Van Druten’s obituary says her life “revolved around her family.”
She “was more than a grandmother — she was a teacher, a cheerleader, a caregiver, an adventurer, and a coveted friend,” it adds. “She was with her grandchildren more hours than she wasn’t and their loss of Nammy will be deeply felt forever, as will all the lessons she taught them.”
