The Mets are still going to see their former manager, Carlos Mendoza, quite a bit.
After retaining Don Mattingly as manager, the Philadelphia Phillies have brought in the ex-Mets skipper as their third-base and infield coach, revealed by president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski on Thursday.
Mendoza was fired by the Mets in late June following a 34-47 start and a six-game losing streak that further sank one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory. Just two years removed from an NLCS appearance, the Mets were expected to be legitimate postseason contenders in 2026. Instead, the season was done by July, though most of the blame was shouldered by David Stearns after questionable roster construction came back to bite him.
Still, Mendoza was thoroughly outperformed by his successor, Andy Green, who got the Mets to play .500 ball to finish the season despite a fire sale at the trade deadline. Last month, the team dropped the “interim” tag for Green, signing him to a three-year extension as their full-time skipper.
Mendoza went 206-199 in his two-and-a-half years in charge in Queens. As division rivals, the Mets and Phillies play each other 13 times per season.
