Rosarium Health, a company enabling aging at home, announced Thursday that it is partnering with Anthem Medi-Cal to support home modifications for members.

Through the new partnership with Anthem, Rosarium Health will be able to provide in-home assessments for patients who are at risk of falls. These assessments are performed by occupational and physical therapists and surface information about the person’s condition and the environment they live in.

Based on the assessment, Rosarium Health can make home modifications, such as accessible ramps and stair lifts. California’s Medi-Cal program covers certain home modifications for eligible members to address accessibility and safety needs, generally up to a $7,500 lifetime limit.

Rosarium Health will also coordinate the documentation and benefit authorization process with Anthem. In addition, it manages home modification projects through completion by conducting the quality review and handling contractor payment.

The partnership comes as the U.S. population ages and demand for services that help older adults remain safely at home grows. California in particular is affected by this, according to Cameron Carter, founder and CEO of Rosarium Health.

“One thing about California is that it is one of the newer states that have kind of gone over the age acuity cliff in that there’s more individuals over 65 than under 18 in the state of California. … With Anthem specifically, one of the things we’re able to do with them is not only provide those modifications to help people age in place, but provide Anthem for the first time really a deeper understanding of the built environment their patient population is living in and wants to live in,” he said in an interview.

Rosarium Health has several other partnerships with California insurers, including Health Net, Central California Alliance for Health, CalViva and Community Health Plan of Imperial Valley. The partnership with Anthem expands Rosarium’s reach across Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Fresno and Kern.

To measure the success of the partnership, Rosarium will track emergency room visits and inpatient stays, total cost of care and satisfaction from members and caregivers, Carter said.

Ultimately, the company aims to make home modification benefits as accessible as any other benefit, like dental or vision, Carter added.

“We feel like modifying your home should be as accessible as [possible]. So that’s our north star, to make sure we can do it across any population that exists. … We want to make sure everyone has access to this benefit, just like if they wanted to go to the gym or if they wanted glasses, and we want to make sure that reality is consistent from coast to coast,” he said.
