With Carson Benge and AJ Ewing patrolling the outfield and Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton, Christian Scott, and Jonah Tong combining in the rotation, the future is nigh for the Mets. Now they can add top prospect Jefferson Rojas to the mix, too.
Rojas is being promoted to Triple-A Syracuse after Double-A Binghamton’s season ended on Sunday, as first reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic, bringing him one step closer to a potential full-time spot in the majors by 2027.
At 21 years old, the third baseman/shortstop was acquired from the Chicago Cubs in the deal for Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor and immediately assumed the No. 1 ranking in the Mets’ pipeline, per MLB. In 29 games with Binghamton, he slashed .280/.336/.593 (.929 OPS) with 29 RBI and extra-base hits.
He is expected to break into the majors by next season, though his role has yet to reveal itself. As things currently stand, there is no plan to move Francisco Lindor from shortstop, and Bo Bichette is at the hot corner with a bat that has slowly worked its way out of an early-season nightmare.
Bichette told Sammon that he will mull over his future in Queens next month after the season ends. The veteran infielder has an opt-out in his contract, but whether or not he stays remains to be seen. He’s done well to overcome a horrible start with the Mets after signing a three-year, $126 million deal. He’s batting .288 over his last 100 games.
But his season stat line is lacking, and opting out of an already-big pay day to test the waters in free agency when one’s stock might not be the best business practice. If he were to go, the third-base job would be wide open for Rojas to win come spring training.
