BRONX, NY — The New York Yankees won’t have to worry about Roman Anthony for the remainder of the AL Wild Card Series, as the Red Sox star injured the muscles in his right wrist and will be out for the foreseeable future, manager Chad Tracy disclosed.
“We’re trying to replace him,” Tracy said. “We have paperwork in on that, but it’s enough there that we’re not going to have him.”
Anthony, who was limited to just 55 games this season due to a hand injury, suffered the injury during Game 1 on Tuesday night during a number of check-swing attempts.
He was sent back to Boston in the wee hours of Wednesday morning to undergo imaging, then is returning back to New York to be with the team.
Once the No. 1 overall prospect in all of baseball, Anthony batted just .245 with a .735 OPS, five home runs, and 15 RBI in his injury-shortened season. Still, it’s a big bat to be missing while Boston’s backs are up against the wall, trailing 1-0 in the best-of-three Wild Card Series. They were held to just three hits in a 9-0 loss on Tuesday night.
