After decades of the last two iterations of Yankee Stadium always seeming to give the home team an advantage, it finally bit them in the backside on Wednesday night. And now, the New York Yankees’ season is officially over.

The Bronx Bombers fell 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 3 of the ALDS, clinching an emphatic series sweep for the American League East champions, though not without some controversy.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth after Victor Mesa Jr.’s two-run bomb in the top half of the frame, Anthony Volpe’s game-tying two-run home run was overturned after a fan reached over the left field wall and interfered with the play. It forced the Yankees to settle for just one run, as it was deemed that Spencer Jones would have scored easily from first base regardless of the ball not leaving the yard.

A question could be asked: Could Volpe have gone all the way without the fan interference? Mesa had no idea where the ball was, and had it caromed off the top of the wall, it would have taken some time for a Rays defender to track it down.

Alas, no Jeffrey Maier magic exists in the Bronx anymore.

It was not the only time the Rays benefited from the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Right fielder Ryan Vilade — a career minor-leaguer who bounced around six different organizations over eight years — poked a go-ahead solo home run to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning.

The 340-foot shot, which nestled in the first row of the right-field seats, would not have been a home run in any of the other 29 MLB ballparks — truly a Yankee Stadium special.

Jones drew the Yankees level in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double to left, which scored Volpe, who reached with two outs when he lined a single off the back of Tampa starter Nick Martinez.

The Rays carved a two-out rally of their own off Yankees starter Max Fried. Junior Caminero whizzed a single over the veteran southpaw’s head before Mesa jumped on a hanging sinker and 401 feet and into the bleachers in right-center.

While Tampa will wait to face the winner of the White Sox/Guardians series in the ALCS, the Yankees are going home for the second straight year at the ALDS phase. They were bounced in four games last season by the Toronto Blue Jays — this year providing yet another step in the wrong direction.
