Julian Hall and Adri Mehmeti made their returns from international duty with the US national team, and Red Bull New York promptly responded with a 4-1 beatdown of San Diego FC on Saturday night.
Red Bull came out of the gate firing quickly, earning early corners. Justin Che had an ambitious attempt in the 12th minute after a corner came in, and his bicycle kick just missed shaving the top of the goal.
Not too long after, Hall got the opener after a good ball from winger Jorge Ruvalcaba found Hall at the back post for a simple tap-in. Hall can’t stop scoring, after posting four goal contributions in four matches with Team USA.
New York kept their foot on the gas; just four minutes later, Cade Cowell’s corner kick found Devin Padelford at the front post to double the lead.
Next was Ruvalcaba finding the back of the net; his powerful effort went past the San Diego goalkeeper at the near post, bringing New York to a 3-0 lead before the 30th minute mark.
Although San Diego had 69 percent of the ball in the first half, the majority of the quality chances came for New York. Red Bull had 12 shots, six of them being on target.
San Diego’s big chance came in the 44th minute when New York defender Julián Bazán brought down striker Marcus Ingvartsen for a penalty. Red Bull were able to keep their three-goal advantage as Ethan Horvath saved the attempt from Anders Dreyer.
San Diego brought on Cédric Bakambu in the second half, and he made his impact felt as he finished a looping ball from Dreyer to bring them within striking distance with 30 mins left.
New York were still hunting for their fourth in the second half through 16 shots. They finally found it through substitute Eric Maxim-Choupo Moting, who elegantly dribbled through the box before slotting it in the bottom corner.
New York finished the game with an impressive 4-1 victory, which leaves them level with Cincinnati on 36 points and with a game in hand over the Red Bull.
