Police have arrested and charged a tenant of a Washington Heights homeless shelter who allegedly stabbed another man to death over the weekend.
According to police sources, 29-year-old Javed Tyghter has been charged after he allegedly went berserk inside the Fort Washington Men’s Shelter located at 651 West 168th St. just before noon on Sept. 27.
Officers from the 33rd Precinct responded to a 911 call at the location after hearing of a violent argument between two men that ended with one resident stabbing another.
When the cops arrived, they found the 33-year-old victim bloodied with multiple stab wounds across his chest. EMS rushed him to Harlem Hospital in critical condition; he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Police have not yet released his identity, pending family notification.
Tyghter, meanwhile, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder. He is known to police with upwards of six prior arrests, including assault on a police officer.
According to the shelter’s website, the Fort Washington facility serves 200 men experiencing mental health and substance use disorders.
This marks the first reported murder in the confines of the 33rd Precinct this year.
