The Yankees are holding an immense amount of trust in rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr., and so far, he is repaying them in spades.

In his postseason debut, Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox, the 21-year-old became the youngest player in franchise history to bat fifth in a playoff game. He responded by becoming the second-youngest player with three hits in a postseason debut, behind only Gregg Jeffries with the Mets in Game 1 of the 1988 NLCS, and scoring two runs.

“I’ve learned a lot,” Lombard, who has just 42 regular-season games to his ledger after getting called up in August, said. “I feel like you’re learning something new every day whether that’s on the field, baseline-wise, or just off the field by yourself, mentally. But it’s the same thing, staying day to day. You never know what’s going to happen, but wiping off whatever doesn’t work and moving on to the next day and staying prepared.”

The next night, he helped break Game 2 open in the sixth inning with an RBI single that scored fellow rookie Spencer Jones, who reached base on a wild-pitch strikeout, stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error. It gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead and proved to be the first run of a backbreaking six-run frame.

All the result of a tireless work ethic that has become increasingly rare for such a young player.

“It just comes down to preparation,” Lombard said. “I know what I have to do going into the at-bat. Spencer made it easy for me getting to third base, so I just had to stick to my plan and find a way to get him in. Just keep competing.”

With no Aaron Judge, every bit of offensive contribution is necessary to keep the Yankees afloat in this ALDS matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays. Getting the likes of Lombard and Jones to support Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger will go a long way.

There is little doubt that other moments on the big stage await the player who started the season in Double-A.

“He’s just got a great head on his shoulders, a really good routine,” Boone said of Lombard. “He loves the game, which I think is always important. He loves the stuff that’s not sexy: The behind-the-scenes grind, the routine, coupled with being a very talented player.”
