THE CITY Is Now The City Reporter

With this new name, we’re proudly investing in our identity as reporters, people who investigate stories and verify facts. In an era of robots and algorithmic news, we affirm the indispensable value of the professional skills of reporters.

A chatbot doesn’t know how to conduct an interview that is both compassionate and skeptical. It can’t stand outside the immigration courts at 26 Federal Plaza, talking with people as they’re whisked away by federal agents. Sure, a reporter might use artificial intelligence to sift through thousands of pages of public records. But only the reporter herself can go down to the courthouse and wrest those documents from the office clerk.

We believe in reporters who have the experience to ferret out information that powerful people don’t want us to know. Our new name tells the world what we stand for.

Six months of brainstorming sessions, brand consultants, focus groups and online polls reached a clear consensus that The City Reporter best conveys our values.

Our new name will make our reporting easier to find and easier to share. We hope when you tell your friends “I learned it in The City Reporter,” we’ll be immediately recognizable as a news outlet that prioritizes journalists and their skill in serving New Yorkers.

The thoughtful reporting you’ve come to expect from THE CITY is not changing. Our pigeon mascot, Nellie, has a fresh look for a fresh era. But she hasn’t flown away. And we are still here, holding New York City’s powerful accountable and to helping you navigate this crazy city we all love.

Our nonprofit newsroom relies on donations from readers to sustain our local reporting and keep it free for all New Yorkers. Donate to THE CITY today.
