Yankees ace Max Fried could be available to return to the hill for next week’s series in Chicago against the White Sox, manager Aaron Boone told the “Talkin’ Yanks” podcast on Tuesday.
The veteran southpaw will throw a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday, where he is scheduled to throw 60 pitches.
“And then, hopefully be with us in Chicago for his next [start],” Boone said.
The Yankees play the White Sox in a four-game set from July 27-30.
Boone added that Fried will not be “all the way built up at that point, but, hopefully, in a spot where we can build him in his next outing.”
Fried has been on the shelf since the middle of May, when he suffered a left elbow bruise. A prolonged recovery finally led to a first rehab appearance last Friday in Triple-A, where he allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks in three innings of work.
Fried owned a 3.21 ERA with a 1.005 WHIP and 50 strikeouts across 10 starts this season before landing on the injured list. He is one of numerous vital Yankees pitchers who have spent time out this season due to injuries. Gerrit Cole returned from Tommy John surgery shortly after Fried went down, and Carlos Rodon landed on the IL on July 3 due to elbow inflammation. Clarke Schmidt is also recovering from Tommy John surgery, with the hope that he can return sometime in August, at the earliest, and Luis Gil has been sidelined since early May with right shoulder inflammation.
