A man was slashed across the face in a Lower East Side, broad-daylight attack on Sunday, authorities said.
According to police sources, the incident took place on 1st Avenue and 1st Street at just after 2:20 p.m. Cops from the 9th Precinct were called to the NYC Express Deli at 18 1st Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found a 38-year-old man with a slash to the jaw. EMS rushed him to Bellevue Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Sources familiar with the investigation report that the victim was uncooperative with police.
A worker at NYC Express Deli told amNewYork that he saw the man run across the street begging for help.
“It looked like he was bleeding from the neck. Somebody helped him outside and got him a bandage,” the deli worker said, who did not provide his name. “I know the guy. He is a homeless guy who sits out front drinking. He is always here. He is here from when I start to when I leave. Yesterday I left at 3 a.m., and he was here.”
Another witness at a next-door barbershop said he also sees the victim often.
“I don’t know him personally, but he is always here. He was here all summer; he begs for money,” the barber said.
Meanwhile, the suspect, who reportedly wielded some kind of sharp instrument, fled the scene. Police created a crime scene around the deli and the M15 bus stop. A bloody tissue could be seen on the ground.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.
