Jürgen Klopp has left his role as global head of soccer at Red Bull, which oversees Red Bull New York, to take over as the head coach of the German national team.
“My time at Red Bull has been an incredibly rewarding chapter,” Klopp said in a statement obtained by amNewYork. “Honestly, I hadn’t expected it to come to an end this soon. That makes me even prouder of what we have built together and even more grateful to everyone across our clubs and the wider organisation for their trust, passion, and commitment.”
Klopp spent just 21 months in his position at Red Bull, joining in October of 2024 after a wildly successful spell as manager of the famed English club Liverpool, during which he won a Premier League title and a UEFA Champions League crown.
The 59-year-old helped advise the final stages of construction of Red Bull New York’s state-of-the-art training facility in Morristown, NJ, and was on hand for its official unveiling in April. He was also a part of the team that hired Michael Bradley to take over as head coach of New York over the winter.
“It’s bittersweet,” Bradley said of Klopp leaving. “I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Jurgen. There are a few people who belong in that category, but Jurgen is absolutely one of them. When I had the opportunity to meet him early last year, he saw something in me, was willing to give, and was absolutely on board in giving me an opportunity to be at this club. I will always be thankful and grateful to him for that.”
Germany’s disappointing showing at the 2026 World Cup here in the United States led to the dismissal of manager Julian Nagelsmann and an opening that Klopp ultimately could not pass up. The four-time winners are mired in their worst-ever slump at the competition, having crashed out of the group stage in 2018 and 2022 before getting upset by Paraguay in the Round of 32 earlier this month.
“Becoming head coach of the German national team is a great honor and, at the same time, a big challenge that I am eager to take on,” Klopp said. “… I am leaving Red Bull with the confidence that the global football organization is exceptionally well-positioned and has a successful future ahead. I will look back on this period with great pride and deep gratitude, especially for the collaboration with the global soccer team led by Mario Gomez and Florian Scholz. I wish the entire team and everyone involved continued success and all the very best for the future.”
