New York Jets wide receiver Adonai Mitchell underwent a procedure to repair his finger shortly after injuring it in practice before Week 3, head coach Aaron Glenn revealed.
With the issue believed to be minor, the Jets opted not to put him on injured reserve, with the belief that he would be back within four weeks.
That did not happen, as Mitchell will not be available for Gang Green’s Week 6 matchup with the New England Patriots on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.
“So he did have a small procedure on his hand,” Glenn said. “But the good thing is, man, he’s moving his fingers around really, really well.”
It is the first time since Mitchell suffered the injury that Glenn is providing some clarity. Last week, he was not even sure about the extent of the injury and was adamant that he did not undergo surgery.
Mitchell is still considered week-to-week, meaning Tim Patrick, who returned from an IR stint last week, will be the Jets’ No. 2 wide receiver behind Garrett Wilson.
There could be some reinforcements on the way, though. Rookie Omar Cooper Jr. has returned from IR after injuring his ankle five snaps into his NFL career — one of them being a 30-yard catch-and-run.
“Obviously, he’s a really good player, but you never want any rookie to actually miss time because the reps are valuable for these guys,” Glenn.
This is already a Jets offense that is without star running back Breece Hall, who is expected to miss a third straight game after injuring his quad. He remains week-to-week, and Braelon Allen will get the nod once again as the No. 1 man in the backfield after rushing for a career-high 116 yards and one touchdown in last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns.
