A straphanger narrowly escaped death at a Greenwich Village subway station Friday morning after being shoved onto the tracks, police reported.
Law enforcement sources said the incident happened just before 9:05 a.m. on Aug. 7 on the E line at the West 4th Street station.
Based on a preliminary investigation, sources close to the case said the victim, a 27-year-old man, became embroiled in a dispute with the suspect on board an E train that had pulled into the station moments earlier. Sources said the dispute stemmed from the two men staring at each other.
The argument carried over to the platform, where moments later, the suspect abruptly shoved the victim onto the tracks. He then fled the scene on another arriving train, the sources said.
Bystanders on the platform pulled the victim to safety before an arriving train could hit him, cops said.
The incident was reported to the 6th Precinct and NYPD Transit District 2. EMS rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of minor bruises and scratches; he was listed in stable condition.
Sources close to the investigation said they are still looking for the shover, who was believed to be 5 feet, 7 inches tall with a stocky build and wearing all-black clothing.
Detectives are now canvassing video from the West 4th Street station, hoping to catch a glimpse of the perpetrator and help bring him to justice.
