New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has had conversations with Dexter Lawrence and his camp over the last week after the star defensive tackle requested a trade last week.

“We’ve had good conversations with his representatives throughout the last five or six days… trying to find some resolution,” Schoen said on Tuesday. “I’ll echo what coach [John Harbaugh] said last week: We’d like for Dexter to be here and at some point, we’ll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be. We’ll see. Conversations have been really good; they’ve been productive, but we’ll see what happens here down the road.”

Despite a down season, Lawrence is still considered one of the best all-around interior linemen in the NFL, though a change of scenery is atop his priorities after the Giants won seven games over the last two years and cleaned house. A brand-new coaching staff features Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson.

If a resolution cannot be reached in terms of keeping Lawrence in New York for the remaining two years of his contract, the most logical course of action would be for Schoen to trade him within the next week to add to the Giants’ assets ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Schoen, however, said there are no deadlines in place as of yet to facilitate a trade.

“I’m not going to get into it if there’s a deadline or not. He’s under contract for two more years, so we’re not going to put deadlines on anything,” he said. “I’m always going to pick up the phone, so if a team calls… that is my job as the general manager.”

Schoen added that it is unlikely the Giants will trade back from their perch at No. 5 overall in the draft, though teams have been “sniffing around” about moving up.

“We’ve gotten a couple calls… We’ll have to wait and see who’s there when we pick,” Schoen said. “I don’t really foresee us moving back before Thursday night.”

The Giants have been heavily linked with Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love throughout the pre-draft process, which would potentially create a new-look two-headed tandem in the backfield alongside the bruising second-year rusher, Cam Skattebo.

“He’s an offensive weapon,” Schoen said of Love, who led the nation last season with 1,372 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. “He’s not just a running back. He can play on third down, you can split him out. He can catch the ball.”
