As expected, Cody Bellinger is headed to the 10-day injured list after suffering a strained left hamstring, the Yankees announced on Sunday prior to their series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The All-Star outfielder suffered the injury during the top of the eighth inning of New York’s 3-1 victory on Saturday night while legging out a double. He remained in the game until the end of that half inning, then went directly down the dugout tunnel.
Following the game, Bellinger said the hamstring felt “a little tight,” while adding that he did not believe it to be “anything too serious.”
“I felt like it was smart to get out of there,” Bellinger said. “I’ll see how I wake up tomorrow and go from there.”
Obviously, things only further devolved on Sunday for the Yankees to make this call. Spencer Jones was recalled from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes/Barre to take Bellinger’s spot on the roster.
The 2026 All-Star Game MVP is just the latest big-name Yankee to head to the injured list. The team is still playing the waiting game with Aaron Judge, as his fractured right rib slowly heals. He will need to undergo further re-imaging of the area before getting cleared to resume baseball activities. Fellow slugger Giancarlo Stanton is inching along in his running progression after straining his right calf twice.
Bellinger had been trudging through the worst stretch of his season. He has not hit a home run in 31 games and was batting .212 with a .564 OPS in his last 27 games. Still, he had been on a six-game hitting streak and had reached base safely in 11 of his last 12 games. In his second season with the Yankees, the veteran is slashing .259.350/.420 with 11 home runs and 53 RBI.
“He’s a huge member of our team and what we do,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s just a tremendous all-around player… Hopefully it’s on the minor side, but we’ll see.”
