Detectives have charged a man who allegedly killed a woman in Central Park with a stick in a cold-blooded attack on Sunday morning.
According to police sources, 36-year-old Jonathan Robles was booked on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police said his alleged 63-year-old female victim, whose identity is still being withheld pending family notification, was discovered unconscious with head trauma in a wooden gazebo near the Boathouse at East 74th Street and East Drive at 9:43 a.m. on Sept. 27.
Officers from the Central Park Precinct responded to the gruesome scene along with EMS units, which pronounced her dead at around 10 a.m. While police initially reported she had suffered stab wounds, cops now say that Robles allegedly brutally beat her with a wooden stick.
It is believed the victim was homeless and living in the area. A tent, articles of clothing, and other items were seen around the wooden structure. Sources say the victim was a known artist who sold paintings from her makeshift home.
Throughout the day on Sept. 27, NYPD detectives sealed off the area amid the pouring rain and were seen using flashlights as they examined the scene.
Robles himself is also homeless and has an address listed at the Barbour Hotel homeless shelter in Hell’s Kitchen.
