Regardless of the versatility that was lauded by David Stearns, Brett Baty’s future with the Mets was in considerable jeopardy after yet another underwhelming summer.
The former top third-baseman prospect, who has lost his spot at the hot corner to take on more of a super utility role, was stuck treading water above the Mendoza line in early August, trying to parse his way through the litany of adjustments that manager Andy Green and his staff were throwing at him.
“I thought in July, he was really aggressive and went to the pull side a little bit,” Green said.
But that “flipped,” as Green described it. Baty rediscovered his balance at the plate and started utilizing all fields. As a result, he’s having his most successful stretch as a pro.
Over his last 26 games, the left-handed Baty is slashing .390/.471/.678 (1.149 OPS) with three home runs and 18 RBI. Of his last 27 hits, 18 of them have gone to either center or left field.
He still has that pull power when necessary, though, as accentuated by Wednesday night’s ninth-inning, pinch-hit grand slam off Trevor Williams in the Mets’ 7-2 win over the Texas Rangers.
While the future is a bit more murky for his former, fellow “Baby Mets,” Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez, Baty’s hot finish to this season should do more than enough to keep him in the equation for next year’s club, which will likely look a bit different after Stearns’ numerous whiffs last winter.
“[Baty] looks balanced, athletic, great swing decisions, and the numbers really support that,” Green said. “He’s playing good defense, too. He’s been a well-rounded player… Just a little bit of everything. He deserves a lot of credit for flipping his season around. It was a really tough start for him as well, and he went through a lot of stretches where he wasn’t getting on the field consistently, and it’s fun to see him do really well when getting consistent opportunities.”
