That’s a wrap, folks.
The beloved AMC movie theater on Second Avenue and East 31st Street in Kips Bay will close by the end of 2026, the company confirmed Monday to The City Reporter.
“We expect that AMC Kips Bay 15 will continue operating until the end of 2026, at which time the theatre will close following the property owner’s decision to exercise its contractual right to terminate the theatre’s lease before its scheduled expiration,” spokesperson Ryan Noonan said in a statement.
The announcement comes amid rumors swirling on social media that the AMC will soon show its last film. “I just fell to my knees in devastation,” one Reddit user wrote on a thread about the theater shuttering.
“This really sucks. They have the actually comfy iteration of the recliners, a lot of very big standard screens, a nice vibe, and a lot of the indie programming,” another Redditor wrote. “A huge blow.”
The theater has been open since 1999, and Kansas-headquartered international chain AMC took over operations in 2006, the company said. Noonan said details of the closure are still being finalized and a formal closure date will be announced in the coming months.
The land where the theater stands is owned by Kips Bay Development Limited Partnership, which is affiliated with JD Carlisle Development Corp. and MD Carlisle Construction Corp., property records show. The owners declined to comment Monday.
It’s not clear what will become of the space, or if a larger redevelopment is planned for the site.
