The Giants held their first practice in pads and faced intense weather as they continued their offseason training camp.

The workout was messy. The team practiced through over an hour of heavy rain, dealt with slippery balls, and an egregious amount of pre-snap penalties, which occurred before, during, and after the rain.

“The second week is the big week of camp,” Giants head coach John Harbaugh said. “This is your opportunity to really grow as a football team… You build your foundation in training camp for your team… just get to work and get better, that’s really what we’re focusing on this week.”

Rookie linebacker Arvell Reese stood out as the defense outplayed the offense. Reese, who the team selected with the fifth pick in this year’s draft, has flashed all over the field and consistently wrecked plays for the offense.

“You see the talent, obviously,” Harbaugh said. “I think he’s very sharp for a first-year guy, he gets things right pretty much all the time [and] makes very few mistakes. He’s a very serious-minded guy, and he’s very determined.”

Reese finished the practice with multiple tackles for loss and even managed a sack after beating star left tackle Andrew Thomas during a rep.

Linebacker Micah McFadden had another interception, as did safety Jevon Holland. Cornerback Deonte Banks had two opportunities at an interception but dropped one in the rain and tipped the other.

Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson will look to emphasize discipline. Wilson insists that each player on the defense completes 10 push-ups for every penalty. Today, they did 40 push-ups for their four penalties.

Jaxson Dart had a tough practice. The offense struggled to gain yards, and the quarterback struggled with the wet footballs as one pass slipped from his hands into the arms of a waiting defender.

Rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields has continued to impress through this stage of offseason programs. The third-round pick had a head-turning catch near the sideline on a pass from Dart.

Malik Nabers is still easing into practicing. The superstar wide receiver did not participate in 11-on-11 play, but went through drills with the other receivers and participated in the offense’s install period.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. stood out on Monday as well. The running back appears to be in great shape and has been heavily involved in the offense. He will look for success alongside teammate Cam Skattebo.

“Iron sharpens iron,” Tracy said. “We’re two different running backs, so I think we complement each other really well… You best believe I’m going to push [Skattebo] to be the best he can be, and he’s gonna push me to be the best I could be.”

Giants training camp program continues on Tuesday at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
