After a year-long renovation, the resilient owner and dedicated staff at Evangeline’s are thrilled to announce the Grand Reopening of a fully refreshed Costume Mansion – located on the upper two floors of the historic building – on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Doors officially open to the public that Saturday at 10 a.m. and the first 200 guests will receive swag bags filled with exclusive, limited edition branded merchandise. Plus, as a thank you to the community, shoppers can enjoy 10 percent off everything in the store for the entire Grand Reopening weekend.
While reopening of the beloved Costume Mansion is a celebration in itself, a lively, spirited, and family-friendly K Street Market activation will also be taking place on K Street from Front to Second Streets at the Old Sacramento Waterfront on June 27-28 (pedestrians only; street will be closed to vehicles). To set the stage in pure Costume Mansion style, a vintage 1962 Cadillac Superior Combo Hearse will be parked in front of Evangeline’s, and the community can enjoy a variety of free entertainment throughout the weekend.
“We deeply appreciate everyone who reached out with kind wishes, encouragement, and generous offers to help during the renovation. The incredible outpouring of support has meant the world to us,” said Evangeline’s Owner Deborah Chaussé. “And now, we are finally ready to celebrate and welcome everyone back to our beloved Costume Mansion. So, gather your friends, family – or just bring yourself – to Evangeline’s for our Grand Reopening weekend…we cannot wait to see each and every one of you!”
As background, on June 17, 2025, the historic building that houses Evangeline’s experienced a fire that caused considerable damage to the first-floor gift shop that remains temporarily closed as restoration continues. A reopening date for the first-floor gift shop will be announced at a future time.
Evangeline’s first opened its doors in 1974 on K Street in the historic Howard House by Dorothea Evangeline Chaussé with a vision to sell antiques. Over the years, the store evolved into a destination for off-beat toys, funny cards, and other eccentric gifts. Then in 1985, Dorothea retired and handed the shop keys to her daughter Deborah Chaussé, who soon added Halloween costumes to the merchandise mix. After several decades, a series of store expansions and unexpected twists and turns, Deborah is still working hard and welcoming old and new customers.
Located at 113 K Street at the Old Sacramento Waterfront, Evangeline’s Costume Mansion will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the Grand Reopening weekend on June 27-28, 2026.
