Mayor Zohran Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin boarded the Intrepid Museum on Monday to observe Memorial Day and honor the lives of those who perished in the line of duty.
Inside the iconic aircraft carrier, one veteran could be seen wiping away tears with a tissue as military officers unfurled a gigantic star-spangled banner. For veterans like him, the day of remembrance, and the recognition shown to both service members and Gold Star families who have lost loved ones, means everything.
“Memorial Day is a day where words often feel entirely insufficient. We pause the frantic pace of our lives to sit with a heavy, sacred silence, the silence left behind by those who never came home,” Admiral Karl Thomas, commander of the United States Fleet Forces Command, said. “The sacrifice of those who made that trade represents the staggering cost of freedom. It is almost impossible to fully comprehend the sheer scale of the lives given over 250 years.”

Mayor Mamdani also reflected on the sacrifices made by generations before him.
“I look out and see the faces of countless veterans and military families, some whose service only just ended, and some who even served on the Intrepid years ago. We are so grateful for all that you have done for our nation. Thank you,” Mamdani said.
“On July 4, we will mark 250 years as a nation, 250 years since Americans came together to declare our freedom from tyranny and oppression. For 250 years, we have lived side by side, working every day to become a little more free and to fulfill the promise upon which this nation was founded: that all men are created equal. As we enjoy lives of peace and freedom, homes where we are safe at night, and children who can learn and grow in school, we must remember those who made those freedoms possible.”
The commemorative event culminated in a poignant ceremony as Mayor Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin joined military leaders in tossing wreaths into the Hudson River to honor fallen service members.
