New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and the FIFA World Cup 2026 NYNJ host committee announced Wednesday that they are reducing the price of their shuttle bus service for fans traveling to matches at MetLife Stadium from $80 round-trip to $20.
The move comes amid an uproar regarding the pricing of transportation to World Cup games in East Rutherford, NJ, home of the NFL’s Giants and Jets. New Jersey Transit was initially set to charge fans $150 round-trip to ride the rails to MetLife Stadium, then lowered it to $105, and then again to $98 on Tuesday.
“Hosting the World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for New Yorkers, and we are making this world-class event as affordable and accessible as possible,” a statement from Governor Hochul read. “Delivering cheaper shuttle bus service is a no-brainer: making it easier to get to matches and saving fans money, especially for New Yorkers who will benefit from exclusive tickets at this new, lower price. This is your World Cup, and from Buffalo to Brooklyn, New Yorkers should be able to enjoy every moment of it.”
The New York City area will be at the epicenter of the World Cup, which will be watched by billions worldwide. MetLife Stadium, which will be known as the NYNJ Stadium during the competition, will host five group-stage matches beginning on June 13, a Round of 32 match, a Round of 16 tie, and the Final — perhaps the largest singular sporting event on the planet.
But pricing for nearly every aspect of the fan experience has been a constant issue. Matches at MetLife Stadium have the highest average ticket price at $7,451.47. That’s nearly $3,000 more than the No. 2 most expensive site, Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, according to a study from LiveFootballTickets.com.
Bus capacity has been expanded from 10,000 seats to 18,000 seats for five matches and 12,000 for three matches. Those who previously purchased shuttle tickets will automatically receive a $60 refund.
