New York Giants veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton recently underwent core muscle surgery and will not be available for the team’s spring program.
He is expected to be back when training camp begins in July.
His absence will be another notable one for the offense to contend with as offseason activities ramp up. Star pass-catcher Malik Nabers is continuing his rehab from a torn ACL suffered early last season.
It will leave second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart with a thinner crew to work with, though it does offer an opportunity to get a more intense look at rookie Malachi Fields, who was selected in the third round of the draft last week out of Notre Dame.
Other receivers that will be in the mix for roster spots include Isaiah Hodgins, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin, Jalin Hyatt, and special-teamer Gunner Olszewski.
The Giants and new head coach John Harbaugh have also been in contact with Odell Beckham Jr., who worked out for his old team and underwent a physical earlier this month.
Slayton’s role with Big Blue has steadily decreased over the years. He mustered just 37 receptions for 580 yards and a touchdown with five drops despite the lack of depth at the position after Nabers went down in Week 4. His 7.9% drop rate ranked in the bottom 25 of the NFL.
