The Brooklyn Nets have signed head coach Jordi Fernandez and his entire coaching staff to multi-year contract extensions, the team announced Monday.

“Jordi is a tremendous leader who, along with his coaching staff, put his stamp on this franchise from the moment he arrived in Brooklyn,” a statement from GM Sean Marks read. “Over his first two seasons, Jordi has built a strong foundation rooted in player development, a competitive spirit, and honest communication, all of which have been embraced throughout our roster. The energy and passion the entire staff relentlessly pour into our players reverberates throughout the organization, and we are excited to have this group continue to lead our franchise into the future.”

This is a showing of good faith from Nets management after Fernandez coached the rebuilding franchise to a combined 46 wins over the last two seasons. With the youngest roster in the league this season (average age of 24.1), they went 20-62 but finished with the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference, behind the injury-ravaged Indiana Pacers and dysfunctional Washington Wizards.

Fernandez and the Nets are attempting to build a contender by developing their own talent rather than the last two failed attempts to piece together a superteam that set the franchise back for years.

Brooklyn played seven different rookies this season, including last year’s first-round pick (No. 8 overall), Eagor Demin, who averaged 10.3 points and 3.3 assists in 25.2 minutes per game. The hope is that they have found the right mix of veterans to start moving in the right direction. Michael Porter Jr. posted 24.2 points per game in his first full season with the Nets after six years with the Denver Nuggets.
