New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn gave offensive coordinator Frank Reich a vote of confidence on Monday despite a continued punchless attack that was mostly neutralized in a 26-19 loss to the New England Patriots.
“I think he’s done a good job, I really do,” Glenn said on Monday. “Obviously, there are a number of things that we can improve on.”
But it feels like there is a lot more that needs to be improved upon compared to what is actually working. The Jets rank 27th in the NFL in points per game this season, 32nd in red-zone efficiency, 25th in third-down efficiency, and have scored just four touchdowns in their last three games.
They are without their star running back in Breece Hall and wide receiver AD Mitchell, but the play-calling remains puzzling — especially the fact that quarterback Geno Smith targeted No. 1 wide receiver Garrett Wilson just twice in the first three quarters of Sunday’s loss to the Patriots.
Wilson caught just one pass for 12 yards, and needed some time to let cooler heads prevail before speaking to the media postgame.
“Not every game’s going to go your way,” Wilson said. “I try to reason it in my head because we had the fourth quarter, and I know that the game can change at any moment. So just try to keep playing my role, waiting for that moment that they want to call on me.”
It’s been much of the same story as it was last year in Glenn’s first season, when the Justin Fields experiment failed spectacularly. Smith, who is likely just a placeholder until the 2-4 Jets can draft a potential franchise quarterback, clearly is not the answer — something that many believed the moment he was reacquired by Gang Green back in March.
Since the start of Glenn’s tenure as head coach last season, the Jets rank 29th in scoring.
Reich, who was out of the NFL for two years, replaced Tanner Engstrand in January and was lauded for his play-calling abilities. It has not translated to his time in New York yet.
“After six games, it’s hard to just say, ‘OK, we’re this,’” Glenn said. “But I would say I think [Reich has] done a good job. Obviously, Geno has done some good things, and you have to give a lot of credit to Frank.”
