A 71-year-old cyclist died on Monday morning in Central Park after colliding with a dog that ran into the roadway, law enforcement sources said.
According to police sources, the cyclist was riding his bike on East Drive off East 84th Street at around 8:18 a.m. on Oct. 5 when the canine, a golden retriever, ran into the roadway.
The cyclist struck the pet and was sent hurtling over the handlebars to the ground, where he suffered trauma to the head and body. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet.
EMS rushed him to Weill Cornell Hospital, but he could not be saved and was pronounced dead. His identity is pending proper family notification.
The dog was not injured. Police sources report the canine was not on its leash at the time. Parks policy allows for dogs to be unleashed in that area of Central Park until 9 a.m. daily.
The dog and its female owner remained on scene, sources said.
No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
